A look back at the career of The Saturdays, lately seen in 4Music's Summer Scoop with McFlurry.
They were the craziest, sexiest, coolest girlband of the 90s, and one of the most successful of all time. Their second album, containing hits like Creep and Waterfalls sold over 11 million copies. Unfortunately, if you burn down your boyfriend's house as rapper Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes did, it'll cost you. And with singer Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins suffering from Sickle-Cell Anaemia, the medical bills were racking up (and the illness prevented them from touring outside the US to capitalise on their success).
The band soon discovered their record deal benefited everyone but the band and in 1995 they were forced to declare bankruptcy, owing $3.5 million. Lisa died in a car accident in 2002, effectively ending the band and their chances of ever recouping the lost money. So don't judge them too harshly for their numerous regrettable reality shows or attempts to cash in on the TLC name. They deserved better.
