In an attempt to keep the band motivated, following the death of Brian, McCartney came up with the idea for a film project which would see the band hire a bus and drive about the country. The movie drew heavily on the band's experiences with LSD, playing on the idea of both a literal and a drug induced trip. The film starred absurdist poet Ivor Cutler, veteran actor Victor Spinetti and a music hall star called Nat Jackley. The idea was to have the film shown by the BBC on Christmas Day, in 1967 - hoping to compete with Bruce Forsyth! In the end it was relegated to Boxing Day, and shown in black & white - losing much of the psychedelic effect. Reviews were scathing at the time, but the Magical Mystery Tour has grown in fans' affections and the rarely shown film has finally been released on DVD and Blu-ray.
