The Village People's monster 1978 hit is a disco classic, gay anthem, and all-conquering dance craze rolled into one.

The routine itself was born when the group appeared on the TV show American Bandstand.

Having performed the song, host Dick Clarke informed them that some of the audience had devised a dance by spelling out the letters of the song's title with their hands.

After a brief demonstration, Clark asked lead group member Victor Willis, "Victor, think you can work this dance into your routine?", to which Willis responded, "I think we're gonna have to."
