Songwriters have often sought to secure airplay by writing about radio itself. But 1979’s Video Killed The Radio Star dispatched two birds with one stone. The song was adopted by DJs who saw it as fond nostalgia for their profession, but it also became the first music video to be played on the newly launched MTV. Presumably they interpreted it as their mission statement.

Written by band members Bruce Woolley, Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn, it was Buggles’ only significant hit. But Horn rapidly became one of our most successful and distinctive producers, bringing us ABC, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Seal and many others. More recently he produced Robbie Williams’ knowingly named album Reality Killed The Video Star. Do you see what he did there?
