Ed Sheeran: "No-one is going to do it for you"

We grabbed man-of-the-moment Ed Sheeran for a quick chat at the BRITs nominations ceremony…

With four BRITs nominations to his name, Ed Sheeran is the rising star of British music. We caught up with the multi-talented 20 year-old (he was born in 1991!) for a quick chat about music, self-belief, and his take on Little Mix's version of Cannonball.

Off camera nugget:

If we're being honest, the interview didn't get off to the greatest start. Ed had accidentally smashed his iPad (and cut his finger) minutes before we began, and then we made a bad situation worse by asking about his BRITs nominations before he was allowed to talk about them.

Whoops! Thankfully, things picked up after that.

Charmingly, Ed was concerned his disparaging remarks about Little Mix's version of Cannonball would be spun to make it sound like he was slagging them off personally.

We're very happy to point out that Ed thinks they're lovely girls and the song choice wasn't their fault. Phew!

Just listened to some of his songs. Pleasant, instanly forgetable litttle ditties that don't exactly push any boundaries.  Music to shop by.

I said that the words are said so quickly that I can't understand what they are talking
about. That is the reason that I commented on it,not because I don't comprehend
the reasons behind rap.If your'e using lyrics then give the listener time to take them in.
I've heard Ed Sheeran perform and don't consider him to be a rapper, not yet anyway.

Why the hate on Ed?? He only said what music he prefers to listen to, its called freedom of speech. Also not all rap music is bad Pro green is pretty good at the moment and he doesn't rap about violence or drugs he raps about LIFE

And for the people who are hating on Ed.. have you actually heard any of his songs, they are amazing and he did it all himself, no songwriter, no back up musicians. You people complain about young people being criminals and not doing anything for society but you hate on him for having a job and doing what he loves.

Keep up the good work Ed would love to see you in concert one day!!

Some bizarre comments about rap on here.

Mackem 67, if you don't understand rap music, then why are you commenting on it?

You don't speak for me. Music is subjective and everybody is not going to like the same thing are they? If you think about it pretty much every genre of music is gibberish to the vast majority of the population ie. does the vast majority of the population like Radiohead? Does the vast majority of the population understand the deeper meaning of their lyrics or does it escape them?

Ed is such an insperation. He is beautiful inside and out. He is the best Singer/Songwriter/Rapper/Musician I have ever heard. His music is about the sheer grit of real life while being beautiful at the same time.

Thats why I love Ed. Im young and his music has made my cry, he has helped me to follow my dreams, listen to my heart and his music has told me that  "I cant exspect people to belive in me if I dont belive in myself".

I have one thing left to say.. Ed thank you so much for being in my life, even if I have never met you before. I couldn't wish for a better role model.  SmileRed heart

Seems like people love to talk about a genre of music they know nothing about, when (conscious hip hop) came about around the early 90s the media started to promote the more lucrative gangster rap with guns, drugs and booty shaking hoes. The kids want the 'Rock and roll life style' so thats the ideal that gets sold to them.

Professor Green is an English Eminem in my opinion. LISTEN before you jusge and say all rap is about violence, Drugs and sex for **** sake poeple

What we need is less rap crap and real music. What a role model, and yes those of us that have a brain know full well who the people are that  are drowning, and dumbing down  our kids with this garbage, don't we MSN, is that why you deleted my previous message, you American  A/H.

Singing about drugs? Perhaps about the horrors of them, the amount of people here spouting rubbish is incredible, you've clearly never listened to his music. The A Team is about the devastating life of a girl of 13 taken from Russian in the sex trafficking world to the streets of London hooked on heroin and made into a prostitute (Listen to little lady this includes a rapper and truly gets the harsh reality he's singing about across) Now for the people saying rappers only ever rap about guns sex and violence... bah only the commercial stuff, try Devlin songs Runaway and Community outcast or Plan B and some of his old stuff like Charmaine.

Back to Ed, he's one of many stars who have come through the ranks the correct way he has gone out gigged taken risks and has truly earned the success he's now receiving, yes he's young but probably has more experience than a lot of "stars" we've had in last 10 years through an insane amount of gigging he has done.  His music has great variety from, very meaningful sad songs such as Small Bump A Team etc.. and then happier songs but still with meaning behind them like You need me I don't need you and Lego House.

So rap gives a commentary on what is going on in life and society from that person's
perspective does it ?
Well they must live a very hectic life as they speak at breakneck speed, and I can make
out barely a word that they say, much less a full sentence.
In other words it's complete gibberish to me,and I would imagine, the vast majority of
the population.

Ed Sheeran? never heard of him, to me rap music sounds like one long half mumbled rant or diatribe, a totally incomprehensible jumble of words strung together, or perhaps I'm just too old.

The way you phrase it as "a sequence of words flow consistently from the top of  their heads",makes it sound as if they coming out with these words spontaneously.
I suppose the time a rap artist needs to write the lyrics to a "song" varies from rapper to rapper, some maybe a few minutes, some an hour or more, some even days.

This is not about black & white music just Good & Bad music & what inspires him in music

Rap music gives a social commetery what is going on in life & society from that persons perspective.(This is the internet 192 char's proper punctuation & syntax not collage essay)
